Merry Christmas! Come on in, I've put some kindling on the fire and poured you a cup of hot cider. My official Christmas blog will appear on Paul Cornell's blog on Christmas Eve. I will be bringing Gold, Myrrh, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme. So, for now, here's some art:

My 5-year old son and I took a crack at the 12 Days Of Christmas in 12 unique art styles. This is improvisational art and we don't prescribe to your rigid, conformist standards of art:

2011 was a..... difficult year. I've been stricken with a health condition that leaves me in permanent, constant pain. I just smile and keep going but most of the time I struggle and I don't want to do anything. I make art because I don't know how to do anything else. sigh. I've been going to the Orafacial Pain Clinic now for a year. If medication doesn't work I'll have to get microvascular decompression surgery. I hope I'm a candidate for the surgery because the pain is totally a major bummer.

In order to pay bills, I've been trying to make it easier for people to buy original art so I'm starting to photograph and list artwork, starting with The New York Five. You can view The New York Five artwork here.

Here's some project updates. I'm drawing Saucer Country. It's coming along.

The long-awaited Funrama #2: It's basically done. I just have to letter the book and do a cover and it's finished. So stay tuned, It's 95% done. I hope you'll buy it. Eventually all of Funrama will be available online.

Get this: I'm working on a comic that will be a free weekly, online comic. Yes, that's what I said. I'm penciling and lettering it now. Should I say what it's called? No, I can't. Okay, I will, It's called Cocotte. I hope I can stick with it and make it happen. I just need a website person to make me a website.

And I'm literally inches away from starting a new limited series for a certain publisher with a certain writer. BROADWAY! I can't say much yet.

And there's another mini-series I'm drawing that I'm very excited about. Soonlyish I hope.

I've been deathly ill this week and an old man in my poor health shouldn't be expected to draw or feed himself on his own. So, I've decided to make a blog in the meantime, so step inside and enter my HOUSE OF PAIN!

An Alice's Adventures In Wonderland Illustration. Inks and watercolors on 300 lb Fabriano Hot Press. I use that paper a lot. About 11 X 17 inch.

I did this promo poster image for the film Best Friends Forever by Brea Grant and Vera Miao.

Alternative Inked version. I'm notoriously bad at drawing realistic likenesses- It's something I want to be better at -But this was fun and I did my best.

A Preacher con sketch. It's really hard to draw characters that aren't mine but I give it my best shot. Inks and Copic Markers.

Supergirl sketch. Commission? Sketch? Inks and watercolors on the Stonehenge paper.

A "quick" Mazikeen sketch with the watercolors and some acrylics as well. I really like the Stonehenge 100 % cotton vellum paper by Rising. I bought it in pads but it looks like the older pads seem to be discontinued. The "new" pads, distributed by Legionpaper, don't seem to be as good... but I'll give it some time. I'm really picky about paper and sketchbooks, and I still haven't found what I'm looking for. Where the streets have no name.

Saucer Country #1 is done and I'm slowly working through #2. My health has been disagreeable. But I'm very proud of it and energized by my collaboraters, Paul Cornell and Giulia Brusco.

My Trigeminal Neuralgia--I have "atypical" TN because I'm in constant pain--has been totally not fun. I'm seeing doctors, taking the anti-seizure meds, and I might have to do the MVD surgery if it doesn't get better (you don't even want to know about that) . I've been a little creatively drained lately but, still, I've been surprisingly productive. art is SPEWING forth, and I have new exciting art-things on the horizon!

Well, hi there! I will be appearing at New York Comic Con this week, Thursday -Sunday, October 13-17. You can find me at Artist Alley Table L3. I'll be doing sketches and commissions all week. Oh, hi. Just though I'd do some updates here. Me? how am I? Well, not great. Not bad. Not great.

I've been plagued with some health problems and chronic pain. It looks like I have Trigeminal Neuralgia. I'm seeing doctors for it, so we'll see what's going on. Trigeminal Neuralgia is often described as the worst pains a human being can experience. Just imagine the feeling of being stabbed in the face with sharp electric jolts every second of your life and that's basically how I feel. Trigeminal Neuralgia has earned the name "The Suicide Disease" because so many living with the disorder end up killing themselves.

This explains the pain I live with.

Like many with TN, It started off as a "toothache" (around Jan. 2010). I've seen more doctors and dentists than I count on my fingers. First I got a root canal, than another, than drugs , than extraction, I've been going to the Orafacial Pain Clinic, then more drugs, then painkillers, then acupuncture... it goes on and on. Nothing is working. I've had to take on more commissions than I would like to because I am getting destroyed by medical bills. It's been really, really hard lately.

Do I have TN? I don't know, but all signs lead to yes so far. I'm getting an MRI today and I'm praying it gives me some information...all of it positive and good I hope.

Why tell you this? Mainly, to confess that the Funrama #2 comic I've been working on will probably be delayed for a while. I have all 32 pages drawn! Yeah! But I still have to script it, letter it, tone it and do a cover and I've just lost the energy and motivation for it. I haven't had much energy to make any art for the last few months. Also, I might have to take on more commissions. Maybe. Maybe not. I don't really want to, but I don't know. Not looking for pity here, and I definiteIy don't want any extra attention, it's just that I might need some commissions if things get bad. The good? I AM working on some new projects, trying to get them off the ground. Slowly but surely. I've been really slow but I hope to pick up some steam.

I came up with the idea for this illustration a few years ago while reading Byrne's Blog and he said he rides his bike to Arcade Fire shows (or something like that.) Later on, I discovered his book "The Bicycle Diaries", a diary of sorts containing observation and thoughts on cycling, culture, cities, urban development, etc.

Here's a Preview page for Funrama Presents #2: Raccoon. This is “Part Two” of the story - a stand-alone story - and it picks up after Funrama Presents #1: The Mutant Punks.

I’ll be providing an exclusive 8-page mini at MN Spring Con this weekend, May 21-22.

The full 32-page book will be available for order on my blog later in the year and at conventions.

Ultimately, Funrama, in it’s entirety, will be online as a webcomic. Quite possibly for free. Maybe. But that is not scheduled anytime soon. So, if you want to buy the books, that’s cool; If you don’t, that’s cool.

I’m creating four “Funrama Presents” comic books that are stand-alone stories that introduce major characters. After that, it will likely become a web series of some kind. After that, far away in the future, it becomes collected in trade paperbacks (probably print-on-demand by me.)

I haven't Bloggered in a while. I've been busy and/or tired; and/or not feeling well; and/or just not "into it". THE NEW YORK FIVE is done. Phew. The last issue will be out in a few weeks. Those suckers are 32 pages. Brian did a tremendous job on the last book. It's JOHN HUGHESESQUE (I hope that analogy doesn't get me beat up.)...but better...A great ending! Lucky for me, Jim Rugg helped out with inks on a bunch of pages. He's such a great artist. Here are some of my pencils. See, I can draw in pencil too, I bet you didn't know that. Click on the image. I needed some quick cash so I yelled out on Twitter that I'd draw LOCAL commissions with backgrounds for $60. Everyone had to send me a photo of their hometown, favorite place or memorable location and I would work it into the composition. Just like a real artist! I said I would only do 3 commissions and I ended up taking, like, 12 or 15 or something. O_O Who am I to say no? Naturally, I'm exhausted now, but in return, I have a little extra jingle in my pocket. I'm trying to wrap them up and get back to my actual, real comic projects and then I will cut off commissions so I can concentrate on my "work". I know people don't have a lot of money to spend in this craptastic economy so I'm trying to spend a lot of time on these drawings and make them "special" and "nice to look at".

Batman 80-Page

I wasn't paying attention and I forgot to mention the Batman 80-Page special came out last week and has a story drawn by me.
My first DCU job! This was a big thrill for me because I always wanted to draw Batman as a kid and anyone who knows me, knows that I am a massive DC Comics Fan Zombie Nerd Boy. Especially the Batman universe, and it was a thrill to be able to draw my all-time favorite Batman rogues--The Riddler and Catwoman!

The story, "May I have This Dancer?", was written by Paul Tobin and colored by Trish Mulvihill. It was a huge highlight to work with both of these creators.

I hope you get a chance to stop in the ol' comic shop and check it out.

Honestly, seriously, I'm not a Pink fan. I just had an idea for an illustration, that's all, and went with it. I was going to do Lady Gaga, but at the time, everyone was doing Lady Gaga art all across the universe and it was a bit overkill, so I went with another pop star. Like Morrisey, I don't listen to her music. I like that one song she did with that one woman from Four Non Blondes and that one other song they played on the radio that one time.

September solicitations rolled in, so I can celebrate the news that I'm drawing a one-shot of THE UNWRITTEN! I'm really excited to be working with Peter and Mike again. Reunited, and it feels so good. I really value the work I did on LUCIFER for 5 years and I'm glad to see that fans still adore the series.

This issue is going to be really unique. It's a massive 64 pages in all. It's definitely the most insane thing I've ever worked on. But, It's going to be a really fun issue. Ofcourse, my one-shot had to be the most complicated comic book ever created in the history of comics.

Here's some Sandman commissions. I've been completely burnt out on commissions lately. And, sadly, I'm going to have to place an immediate moratorium on them. I'm just too busy with the "real" work and the commissions have just been taking over my life. I value every commission request I get--I love doing them--But I need to stop them for about 7 months so I can get my work done. I'm working on three comic projects at the moment and they need %110 of my immediate attention. I'm going to spend a week finishing up a few commissions that have been promised , but after that, I hope everyone else waiting for commissions can be merciful and wait until around November when I can start them up again.

The best way to get sketches and commissions from me is at conventions, where I'm trapped and I can't say no. This weekend, I'll be at TCAF, The Toronto Comic Arts Festival.

I'm posting some preliminary art for my side project Funrama exclusively at this Tumblr blog, Funrama . I think you should go "Follow" it if you like art and stuff. I feel really bad that I'm not using Tumblr like everyone else does but, bah, I'm just too busy.

My strategy for Funrama is constantly changing. I'm working towards having two Funrama promotional books for the 2010 convention season. One will be for C2E2 Chicago (April) and TCAF (May) and that book will feature The Mutant Punks. The next book will be for SDCC (July) and New York Con (October) and that will feature my character Raccoon. These promo books will feature snazzy pin-up art from all the best artists in the comics galaxy. But I still have to write and draw these books, so I'm violently busy these days. There will be a website. I'm still working on that. And there may be some other Funrama promotions this year. But not too much because The New York Four is my main focus. Ok, seriously,I need to rap with you. I've been super busy. I'm on a tight schedule drawing THE NEW YORK FOUR. I'm happy with how it looks so far. I'm super busy working on my personal side project FUNRAMA. I'm planning on presenting two Funrama promo books for the C2E2, TCAF, SDCC and NY CON comic conventions. But I have a LOT to do to make that happen. More info on that soon!

I have a heaping pile of commissions and drawings I owe people. I'm going to attempt to knock down one per week and get them done by May. Thanks for waiting. introducing.....THE MUTANT PUNKS!

Concord - "Captain Concord", as he is known in the Bermuda Triangle, is the dashing, swashbuckling leader of The Mutant Punks. He is a human supersonic airplane. He can fly faster than the speed of sound and he uses his flying powers to fly and do other flying-type things.

Twisterella - By altering the temperatures around her body, Twisterella can create a microburst of powerful blunt force winds completely at her control. She uses these powerful hurricane-like winds to levitate, hurl enemies into the air, kill, and even spin a large house like it was a top. She's also Concord's girlfriend so don't even look at her or he'll kill you if she doesn't kill you first.

Lead Head- A "man" made of pure, solid lead. A horrifying figure both in size and lethality. He is a walking mass of the dense, malleable and highly toxic metal. After he crushes you, the corrosive material of his body absorbs into your skin , enters your blood stream , and quickly targets your nervous system. Once his lead fuses into your body, it has the ability to shut down all organ function and even delay puberty in children.

The Fog- This truly ghastly being has the power to phase into the bodies of humans and other intelligent beings and take over their body, mind and soul. Like a vapor of mist, he can shift in and out of people and control them. After he enters a host body, The electrical field of his own form shuts off the basic nervous system and brain function of the poor sap, and replaces it with his own. Once The Fog has taken over, you become an empty shell for him to manipulate and control. You're aware of what is happening but he has clouded your own mind - like a fog - and you are helpless until he releases you and phases into the body of another unfortunate loser.

10 years later....No... more accurately, 20 YEARS later- and I think I'm ready to begin releasing art and info on my personal comic--entitled Funrama (obviously). I think I have a web designer. I'm currently trying to assemble all the art and material for this project. I've been guarding this closely, because I don't want to put my ideas out in the open until I "publish" it. But I think this is going to happen in a month. Maybe.

The main story will happen much later but I'm going to put up two short stories that build towards the main event. The first is called FUNRAMA PRESENTS: THE MUTANT PUNKS which introduces The Mutant Punks. The second will be FUNRAMA PRESENTS: RACCOON which tells the story of my character, Raccoon. I'm a little reluctant to launch this right off the bat with The Mutant Punks. They're actually minor characters that show up once and awhile to kill and destroy and call people names. I'm afraid people will read it as cynical, but that's what the Mutant Punks are. And the Raccoon story will be completely different. It is what it is. I'm not following any of the "rules", which is why it would be hard to get a publisher to publish my project.

This is not a webcomic, per se. This is a personal side project in every sense of that definition. The FUNRAMA PRESENTS stories will be combined into a promo book that I hope to have available this summer with superstar pin-up art extras. The end goal is a set of 3 graphic novels. It could take years. Print on Demand..Unless a publisher wants to magically come forward and publish it. Anyway, More to come. I will be making a process Tumblr blog too.

These are two pictures of things. To say this is the tip of the iceberg is a continental understatement. I have boxes of artwork I've never shown because I fiercely protect my one, single life-long creation. It's a comic I've been "working on" for over 20 years. I drew 60-some issues when I was age 11 through high school. Temporarily launched it after college. Attempted to relaunch and pitch it 2 years ago.

I want to do "silly" comics as well as "serious". This particular comic falls somewhere in the "completely insane" category. It's epic and nonsensical at the same time. I've never done a comic just for the pure joy of doing a comic. Free of rules and regulations. I mean, a comic that wasn't for a "job". Well, not for 20 years or something. So, this comic is me being a kid again.

I think the main comic will start next fall, 2010. But I'm going to put up two "prequel" stories that will run from about January to then. I don't think of this as a "webcomic". It's just something I'm drawing and I'm going to put up for free to look at. It's just a personal project. I might not even advertise it at all because if no one reads it, that would be kinda cool too. I'm just doing it for myself. For "Fun". Pun intended.

Let me know if you know anyone that knows anyone who can do website design. I want--and this is so important- to do basically nothing. If I can find someone who will do everything, that would be nice. I don't want learn site design and code. I draw and I paint. That's all i know how to do. I want to hand over the art and logo and do nothing else. Otherwise, I'll just probably put it up on blogger or Tumblr or something which is fine by me. Okay then.

I was just thinking that Comic Book Tattoo deserved an encore on this blog since it picked up two awards this year- an Eisner and Harvey Award for Best Anthology of 2009. I think that's the first time I've ever "won" an award, even though it doesn't really count since there was , like , 100 writers and artists involved or something like that. Here's a page from my story- White Horses, written by John Ney Rieber, base on the song, "Winter". Congrats to everyone involved with the book!

My newest MICROPHONE portrait is Louise Wener from the band Sleeper. Wait... Who from the What Now? Sleeper. It was a band. I'm fascinated by bands that show up and make a splash for 4 years, then just disappear from the collective human consciousness forever. I checked, and Louise Wener is now a mom, writes novels and plays poker. I think that's cool.

Primarily, I did this to investigate if Manga Studio Debut will be appropriate for the production of The New York Four 2. Hence, all the dots. I think Manga Studio will suffice.

DMZ #44: NO FUTURE (and stuff)

This week's comic supply begets the release of DMZ #44, part 3 of 3 the conclusion to the dark and tumultuous NO FUTURE story line and the end to my short residency on DMZ. Now, I must go away for a long time to a secret, underground, fortified bunker to draw The New York Four part 2: Rise of the Silver Surfer. That's just the working title, it'll be called something different , I think.

On the health front, well, I guess I'm doing okay, I guess, if you really want to know. I had surgery to remove The Bad Thing which went well. But my symptoms are still cold kickin' it live so i'm worried about that. The first pathology report came back as no big trace of the "C word" so that's a huge relief. But, there could always be a little dab of low-grade malignant bad thing, so they send it to the Mayo Clinic for a final Supreme Court ruling. Hope and pray. And a few Jedi mind tricks too.

Well, that was depressing! Now I get to go draw fun, happy things! No more vikings chopping off heads! No more gasmask terrorists mowing down people with machine guns! Now I get to draw cute college girls reading books and sitting on trains.

Well, anyway. I really want to get back to posting actual art soon. My health has been a real problem though. Less than 2 years after having multiple surgeries to remove my much-blogged-about kidney stone, I find out I have A Bad Thing in my bladder and I have to go into surgery to get it removed and tested. Fun. I know you're jealous. So I have surgery right after San Diego Comic Con. Mommy , I'm scared. On top of that I have back pain and carpal tunnel problems. Huuuuurt.

I live with and work with pain. I have the health of a 76-year old man. Sorry to bring you down. I'll go back to being sardonically funny and full of sunshine and rainbows and purple horseshoes right after this post. This is just to get some leeway with people who are waiting for work and drawings and commissions from me. I 'm sorry, I have to ask some of you to be patient and wait. I know it's hard to wait. I've been on the monthly deadlines for a year and I'll get to everyone's commissions when I get back from San Diego Con, which starts next week. Sorry for not answering emails for 4 months. Just trying to get my work done and be a dad. Sssssooooooorryyyy.
