LOCAL Short Film

Fans of Local will get a kick out of this. I have got to say, It's a real treat to see something I've drawn with characters I've created transcend the comic page and show up in another medium. Check out this short film by A.J. Meadows based on the Minneapolis episode of Local (Local #2: Polaroid Boyfriend). It's very creative on its own yet they preserve a lot of the original shots in the comic panels. I only wish I had the riches to have them film in the exact locations in Minneapolis but this is great. I love it.

LOCAL

Come to The Release Party!

Read Local #3, considered by many as their favorite issue, for Free!

Check Comic Book Resources for articles on the making of Local from the writer and artist and more to come.
You can discuss LOCAL in the ONI FORUMS

NPRon Local:
Ryan (Kelly)'s inks bring a meticulous, well-researched attention to each new locale that will have residents playing spot-the-neighborhood-landmark. And the best thing about the oversized, hardcover edition of the run, in stores today, is the ability to pore over Kelly's rich backgrounds and appreciate their detail without risking an aneurysm.

Wood and Kelly set out to show nothing less than how Megan herself gets shaped by each new city, and by the particular choices -- good and bad -- she makes there. Over the course of the series, we watch her reckless (okay: dumb) behavior give way to reflection, her youthful, omnidirectional anger gradually recede to reveal a quieter kind of strength.

The Local Hardcover Will Crush You

Well, That's it, strike the set, It's in stores tomorrow, September 17.

I'll be in New York next week with Brian to promote the book at Rocketship Comics. More info to come.

The artist is all tapped out, But it needs to be said that Oni really deserves awards and all-expense-paid Princess Cruise trips to Tahiti for putting out THIS book at a $30 price point. They put in a lot of time and elbow grease checking off everything from paper stock to pantone colors , sending out a crack team of black-coated Gumshoes to invesigate global shipping routes and secret printing facilities to pinch this down to a $29.99 price tag. Oni could have just gotten really lazy and put out the typical $50 hardcover. If they didn't want you to have this book, they would have made it $50. People, it's $29.99, you have nothing to loose. Oversize. 400 pages. 70 pages of extras. color inside. silver ink. Each signature stitched from the hair of ANGELS.

LOCAL The End

Local.HC.Megan

Wow, It's all over today. Weird.

Thanks to everyone who followed the series. Taking the time to tell this story piece by piece over the past 2 years has made the overall series much stronger and the steady support for the series has made the final hardcover collection a reality.

LOCAL HARDCOVER Pre-Order Now

LOCAL HARDCOVER

Crossposted from Brian...

"The skinny:

The Local Hardcover is:

- oversized (7.5 x 11", like the Marvel oversized hardcovers)
- heavy paper, hardcover, black taped binding (no dust jacket - see The Push Man for easy comparison)
- 384 pages!
- i believe the final 16 pages are full color, containing the original cover gallery
- 57 pages of extras
- $30
- what is gray on the cover image below will be silver

The book is available to order from comics retailers with this code: JUN08 4143

Khepri.com has it at their usual discount: http://khepricom.livejournal.com/225028.html

My personal feeling is that this book will be under-ordered and see a lot of reorder activity, and its availability will be spotty for awhile. Meaning that demand will be higher than the stock Diamond allows smaller publishers to maintain in their warehouses, and a reprint, when the first printing runs out, will take a few weeks. So I suggest everyone place pre-orders with their retailer of choice.

Thanks,"

My 2 cents:
I've seen the mock-up for this book and it's unbelievable. It's basically a Local Absolute Edition for $30. Khepri is selling it for only $19.49 until June 30. Duh, I'm going to buy a bunch for myself.

Local #11 Today

Local #11 is in stores today! Let us know what you think.
Here are the responses to choose from:

A. "I Love It!!"
B. "Meh"
C. "I Hate Megan!"

Special thanks to Chris Butcher, Kayla Hillier, and Eric Kim for helping with the Toronto photos. This was the heaviest photo reference issue yet, I spent forever pouring through images on the web trying to figure Toronto out. I couldn't have done the issue without their help, especially the scene of the Women's bathroom in the end.

I've been working on the art for the LOCAL COLLECTION this week. I did some little concept sketches that look like this. But I think we found the winning version for the final book. Exciting!

Local Update

Local #11 is delayed at the printer, so the new Street Date is April 30. (Note to the Mean People: No, It doesn't take me 8 months to draw a comic book, #11 has been finished for 4 months, it's just been held back for a smoother finale). But now, it's delayed for a little longer. I ripped this off of Brian Wood's website:

Apr 30 - Local #11
May 28 - Local #12
Jul 23 - Local (hardcover edition)

In the meantime, here's a gray version of Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow...

Local # 11 Preview And #12 Preorder

Here's a teaser for the upcoming Local #11, Toronto issue. I know it's 7 years bad luck for posting cover art but the end of Local is very near and I already feel like celebrating. I'm jittery, so I throw all the rules to the wind! Brian makes the best covers don't you think?

I co-wrote this issue so I'm very excited. If you have been a regular reader, take comfort in knowing that the last 2 issues will be incredibly rewarding for those who have been loyally following the series. In this issue we are introduced to a new character in the Local universe--Nancy Bai, a local art student at the Ontario College Of Art and Design. In addition, this issue is our way of resolving any remaining dissonance with the Megan-haters out there. It's my way of
saying, " Oh so you HATE Megan McKeenan? Meet Nancy Bai."

Local.11.02

We're still writing and drawing Local #12, but it's zooming along and almost done.

You can PREORDER Local #11 and Local #12 at Khepri at 40% cover Price. Only $1.79 Each. Stock up on other books while you're there.

In Stores This Week- Local #10 and American Virgin #18

It's a Super Double Team good week at the comic store for me as I have two books on the stands on Wednesday, August 29. So Go Get 'Em!--

Local #10
Written by Brian Wood Art by Ryan Kelly
The flipside to the previous issue of Local, this Austin, TX-based story tracks Megan's brother Matthew McKeenan, as he also reacts to the news of their parent's death. While Megan's journey was proactive, sentimental, and in the end, rather uplifting, Matthew's process is radically different, and possibly dangerous.

American Virgin #18
Written by Steven Seagle; Art by Ryan Kelly and Jim Rugg; Cover by Celia Calle

"Around the World" Part 4 of 5. Adam Chamberlain is having enough trouble trying to figure out what to do or not do with the opposite sex. So how does the third sex fit into the picture? In India, Vanessa makes a play to make time with the golden boy. Will temptation of the flesh win out?

Prints - Local Covers

Just in time for MOCCA in New York, I've made prints available for these 3 original cover art images for the series Local. They're probably the only images from the series I make prints of.

READ FIRST: I print the images off the Inkjet as large as they'll fit on the paper while allowing about an inch of white atleast, at the edges. The prices include shipping, handling and my Paypal fees.
Email me if you have questions. You can pay by Paypal (Paypal button is in the sidebar). I can take check or cash in the mail as well if you need, but that's risky for me. I send them USPS, flat with backing board.
