Northlanders: The Making Of

Northlanders Process

Some of you are probably looking at Northlanders and ask , "how does he do that?!". Well, this illuminates my painstakingly meticulous process for drawing the Vikings. Step one: I do this. Step 2: I do that. And DONE! Bada-Bing. Vikings--They're the wise guys of the 10th Century.

Anyway, I've been hit with a monsoon of busy lately. A lot of people are waiting for drawings and Commissions and I'll get to all those in about a month. sorry, it always takes awhile to get to everything.

Next week I'll be at New York Comic Con! My first one. I couldn't score an artist table but I'll be signing at the DC Comics area.
Here are my signing times:

SATURDAY
3-4pm
: SIGNING - DC/Vertigo booth

SUNDAY
2-3pm
: SIGNING - DC/Vertigo booth

I'm listed on the roster for Oni Press to appear at their booth but I don't have times for that. Maybe next week. Please come by. If you catch me at the booth I'll do a free sketch. Otherwise, it's Five buckaroos for lunch money.

NORTHLANDERS 11
THE CROSS AND THE HAMMER PART 1

Written by Brian Wood ; Art by Ryan Kelly; Cover by Massimo Carnevale
A new Northlanders epic kicks off here! Taking place during the tail end of Viking rule in Ireland, a series of mysterious murders and arsons against wealthy citizens leaves the Viking occupiers worried that a potential uprising might ignite. When surprising details involving the crimes are revealed, though, their jobs become much harder.

Vertigo|32pg.|Color|$2.99 US|Mature Readers

This is part one of a 6-part story. It's a great jumping-on story for any new readers. This is my first big full-art on a 22-page comic book. Check it out!

Benji, No!

Benji, No!, originally uploaded by funrama.

Here's an inked panel from my new job, Northlanders, which I think comes out next week. I can't draw as well as Davide Gianfelice and I can't invoke the Baroque drama that Dean Ormston does so well , but hopefully I bring something unique and different to the series. This looks more like my work in Lucifer than Local or stuff like that. If you put Lucifer, Giant Robot Warriors and Local next to each other, they all look like they're drawn by different artists. With Northlanders , I've been influenced by Lone Wolf and Cub and Vagabond by Takehiko Inoue, so that sorta shows up in the art. I hope people like it. I have 5 weeks to draw each issue but that's cool because I was sorta trained on doing monthly comics and I like doing the monthly schedule thing. I hope people like it.

Northlanders Character Designs

Here are some of my character designs for my upcoming run on the Medieval viking series Northlanders...

(cover artwork is by Massimo Carnivale)

And here's an exerpt from the book, Wars Of The Irish Kings, of the Irish account at the Battle Of Contarf:

" Now on one side of that battle were the shouting, hateful, powerful, wrestling, valiant, active, fierce-moving, dangerous, nimble, violent, furious, unscrupulous, untamable, inexorable, unsteady, cruel, barbarous, frightful, sharp, ready , huge, prepared, cunning, warlike, poisonous, murderous, hostile Danars {Danes}; bold, hard-hearted Danmarkians, surly, piratical foreignors, blue-green, pagan, without reverence, without veneration, without honor, without mercy, for God or for man.

These had for the purposes of battle and combat, and for their defense, sharp, swift. bloody, crimsoned, bounding, barbed, keen, bitter, wounding, terrible, piercing, fatal, murderous, poisoned arrows, which had been anointed and browned in the blood of dragons and toads, and water-snakes of hell, and of scorpions and otters, and wonderful venomous snakes of all kinds, to be cast and shot at active and warlike, and valiant chieftains..."

Dragons, and scorpians and otters, oh my. Otters always make the murderous killing so much more colorful and lighted-hearted.
